The type of electric car charger is one of the most important factors to consider. Some units can take your car from zero to fully charged in half an hour. Others may require up to 12 hours to complete the task. Most chargers fall into one of three categories. Slow chargers are typically rated at 3kW or 6kW and take 6 to 12 hours for a full charge. Fast chargers come with a rating of 7kW or 22kW. A 7kW charger takes 4 to 6 hours to charge a battery, while a 22kW rated unit will charge a car in only 1 to 2 hours. Rapid chargers are top of the line and can charge a vehicle in 30 minutes to an hour. They are often rated at 50kW and are most often found at service stations.

While some drivers rely on commercial service stations to recharge their batteries, most communities aren’t yet equipped to provide adequate stations. Charging at home is certainly the most convenient method of charging and is much more cost effective. Some vehicles can use Level 1 charging stations, which frequently come with the car can be plugged into a standard 120V outlet. Level 1 chargers take around 20 hours to completely recharge an electric car battery. This isn’t a practical charging method for drivers who want to use their electric vehicle as their primary transportation, or for those with long commutes. Level 2 chargers are purchased separately from the vehicle and are plugged into a dedicated 240V outlet. They can charge up to 7 times faster than the minimum standard home chargers, so you can get back on the road in no time.
